District spelling-bee winners honored as board meets at Jefferson Elementary site

The Jefferson Elementary School District board on April 22 recognized this year’s district spelling-bee finalists and crowned a grand champion during a presentation at TRP.
Facilitators introduced the event as a multi-tiered competition that begins at school-level bees and advances fourth through eighth grade finalists to a district championship at Benjamin Franklin. The facilitators said the district competition draws from about 300 words per grade and highlighted finalists from nine elementary and middle schools.
Student representatives spoke about the preparation behind their performances. One finalist said, “I am proud to be Filipino American … This experience has taught me the value of preparation and dedication,” and described practicing word lists daily with a parent. Another finalist described studying “20 to 30 words every day” to prepare for the competition. The grand champion said the experience helped overcome stage fright and build confidence.
Board members praised the students’ discipline and thanked parents and volunteers for supporting practice and event logistics. The board presented certificates of achievement to winners and invited them to remain onstage for a group photo with trustees and staff.
The segment ended with trustees noting the broader district benefits: students’ academic growth, community involvement and representation of school cultures. The meeting then moved on to acknowledgments and routine business.
