The Ellensburg City Council approved a motion authorizing the mayor to sign a letter of commitment in support of a Central Washington collaborative Department of Energy funding application for regional geothermal resource characterization and confirmation.
Buddy Stanovich, Energy Services Director, told the council the proposed project would coordinate with Central Washington partners and Kittitas PUD to evaluate geothermal potential across Kittitas County and to fill gaps in regional information about whether geothermal could support long-term energy resiliency, workforce development, or economic growth.
Stanovich described the item as an early-stage research effort. He emphasized that the present council action authorizes only the mayor—or signature on the letter of commitment in support of the funding application; it does not commit the city to project construction or long-term financial obligations.
Council approved the mayor uthorization by motion. Staff said more detailed project steps, responsibilities, and potential commitments would be developed if the collaborative receives DOE funding.
