Greensboro housing commission elects leadership, moves meetings to 1:30 p.m. and previews tougher code enforcement

At the opening of the meeting the Greensboro Minimum Housing Standards Commission reorganized its leadership and adjusted routine procedures.

Commissioners nominated and elected Mr. MacAskill as chair and Mr. Sufu as vice chair by majority show-of-hands votes. The commission then debated whether to keep meetings at 5:30 p.m. to improve public access or return to the original 1:30 p.m. schedule. After staff said evening meetings had not produced a consistent increase in attendance, the commission voted to return regular meetings to 1:30 p.m., effective next month.

Later in the meeting commissioners and staff discussed that the newly seated City Council will consider amendments to the housing code that would increase fines and expand enforcement tools. Commissioners expressed support for giving inspectors more authority and clearer remedies, saying stronger enforcement would help address long‑standing neighborhood livability concerns.

The commission also approved rescinding items 11–13 after staff reported those cases were in compliance. With leadership in place and a revised meeting schedule, commissioners asked staff for briefings on how proposed code changes would affect both residential and commercial enforcement before the council acts.
