Tama County supervisors reject Secondary Roads’ request for four-day summer schedule

Supervisor Curt Hilmer moved to approve the temporary change to the Local No. 886 United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America bargaining agreement to allow four 10-hour days (Monday–Thursday) beginning June 1 through Labor Day; Supervisor Heather Knebel seconded. Board members expressed concern about ensuring county roadway needs are covered Monday through Friday and avoiding overtime.
The motion failed with a 1–4 vote: Hilmer—aye; Knebel—nay; Doland—nay; Kupka—nay; Turner—nay. The board asked the union to return with a coverage plan that addresses Friday staffing before the supervisors will reconsider the proposal.
The discussion was limited to the scheduling request and operational coverage; no amendment or substitute motion passed and no formal direction to staff was recorded. The board proceeded to other agenda items following the vote.
