Grant County honors volunteer firefighters for life-saving response

Grant County commissioners presented commendations April 23 to members of Fort Bayard and Santa Clara volunteer fire departments for resuscitating a fellow firefighter after a Feb. 13 motor-vehicle accident on Highway 152.
County officials said responders immediately started CPR when a firefighter collapsed at the scene. Through coordinated on-scene care, the team regained a pulse and revived the firefighter, actions described during the meeting as lifesaving. The county read the names of those receiving commendations and handed out commendation bars.
Those recognized included junior firefighter Mario Mononttoya and Chief Larry Mononttoya of the Santa Clara Fire Department; Battalion Chief Daniel Salice and Battalion Chief Carlos Molina of the Fort Bayard Fire Department; Assistant Chief Kevin Vill of the Santa Clara Fire Department; and Captain Jim Lee of the Fort Bayard Fire Department. County leadership commended the responders for their training, calm under pressure and teamwork.
The presentation took place during the regular board meeting; commissioners and fire chiefs urged continued community support for volunteer departments and praised the professionalism of local emergency personnel. No formal action beyond the commendations was taken.
