Curriculum committee advances course revisions, internships and field trips; choir praised for Carnegie Hall performance

The Board’s Curriculum, Instruction & Programs (SIP) committee reported proposed changes to visual and performing arts curricula and other program updates at the May 5 meeting.
Kristen Sonic Schmelz summarized the committee’s review, noting proposed updates to Philharmonic Orchestra, Ceramics 3, and marching band/color guard that are scheduled for full-board consideration on May 12. The committee also discussed elementary enrollment projections for the 2026–27 school year, a new asynchronous financial literacy course, and an AP Economics textbook review slated for adoption at the May 12 meeting. "These updated courses are scheduled for the full board's consideration on May 12," the committee report said.
Dr. Bolton provided an overview of internship opportunities, describing placements that have paired high school students in AP government and student government with placements through a partnership with the Downtown Westfield Corporation. The committee reported plans to expand internship opportunities to a broader range of students.
The board moved and approved a SIP item to permit a field trip at Tamaques. Board members also recognized exceptional student achievement: the Westfield High School chorus and concert choir performed Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living at Carnegie Hall in collaboration with Thurman White Academy of Nevada — a milestone several members called a district highlight.
These curriculum changes, internship expansions and field-trip approvals will return to the May 12 meeting for formal adoption of course materials and related agenda items where required.
