The Elgin City Council on April 21 approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute a proposal for temporary construction support and inspection services to assist the public‑works department through an expected spike in construction activity.
Michael Gonzales, director of public works, told council the city lacks an in‑house professional engineer and that staff are already stretched; he described the contract as temporary construction support for inspection services with anticipated long work hours (approximately 50 hours per week). Gonzales said outsourcing will allow the city to maintain oversight of concurrent projects and meet inspection and construction‑support needs.
Council approved the contract authorization by voice vote. Staff will return with contract details and manage the engagement through the public‑works department.
