Elgin police ask to apply for up to $350,000 in motor‑vehicle crime prevention funds

Chief Chris Noble told the council on April 21 that the Elgin Police Department will seek authorization to apply for grant funding from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles' Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority for up to $350,000.
Chief Noble and Corporal Mary Majewski said past grants from the program helped fund Flock camera subscriptions and investigators; the department's proposal would renew the subscription services and request funding for a detective position focused on motor‑vehicle crime and fraud as well as vehicle and equipment, software, and training. "The Flock cameras have created so much work for us that it has become necessary to seek a person that is solely dedicated to motor vehicle crime," Noble said.
Staff noted the grant includes a 20% local match and that the dollar amounts in the materials are estimates because bids have not been finalized. Past awards to the department have totaled tens of thousands of dollars; if approved and funded at the amount requested this year, the program would have contributed close to half a million dollars cumulatively to Elgin over multiple years, Noble said.
Council authorized staff to apply for the grant; the authorization does not guarantee award or commit local match funds until a future appropriation if the award is made.
