Council adopts ordinance trimming speeds on Taylor Road to address safety concerns

Elgin City Council on April 21 approved an ordinance to lower posted speeds on Taylor Road (SL 109) within city limits following recommendations from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Public works staff explained the measure responds to resident requests to reduce speeds on the corridor between Main Street and Highway 290. The ordinance reduces one section (from 95 to McGonagill Lane) by 5 mph to 40 mph and reduces the downstream segment to 35 mph. Staff said electronic speed‑indicator signs will be adjusted at the same time the static signs are replaced; sign changes are expected to occur in about 7–10 days.
Michael Gonzales, director of public works, said the change implements TxDOT's study and allows the police department to enforce the new limits. The council approved the ordinance on a unanimous vote.
The change is local implementation of a state‑road speed adjustment; residents are expected to see signage updates and enforcement follow shortly after installation.
