Police to emphasize enforcement of e-bike rules; town hall set for April 28

David, a city staff member, told the commission the police department and staff are organizing a town hall on April 28 to educate residents about state code (RCWs), city ordinances and the different classes of e-bikes and other motorized devices.
David said the goal is education with a stronger enforcement posture to follow. "We're going to start enforcing this," he said, noting the department plans to make enforcement more of an emphasis and that a towing company has agreed to assist when vehicles are not used properly. He stressed the event will include Q&A and recommended materials to help the public understand distinctions between pedal-assist classes and motorized vehicles that are treated as motorcycles under state law.
Staff asked the commission to help with publicity and outreach (broadcast or recorded options were suggested so residents could say they had notice). The commission requested a one-page FAQ or talking points and QR codes so its volunteers at the Farmers Market or other outreach events could refer the public to authoritative text rather than attempt to interpret laws on the spot.
The town hall was tentatively scheduled for April 28 at the Rotary Room; David said the police would supply content for FAQs and that staff would post links on city web pages and social channels when available. Commission members agreed to be present to help with set-up, outreach and to listen to community concerns; some members noted they would not be able to attend that date.
