Transit director proposes a dual-role mechanic/driver position to keep buses running and use ALDOT funds

Keonte Dejarnette, who identified himself as representing the county transit department, told commissioners the system's outreach and ridership have increased and that revenue year-to-date had already exceeded last year's figure.

Dejarnette asked the commission to approve a job description for a combined mechanical technician and driver to handle routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations, saying ALDOT would reimburse much of the cost. "ALDOT will be responsible for 50% of that budget," Dejarnette said, adding that some administrative items may have an 80/20 reimbursement split depending on the expense.

He described operational pressure: the fleet has roughly 10 buses, "probably doing close to 200 miles a day" on many runs, making quick turnaround important. Dejarnette said using an in-house mechanic would reduce downtime that occurs when buses are taken to external shops and could save money over time.

Commissioners pressed on logistics for using county shop bays and equipment. Road Department Engineer Heath Sexton said the shop might sometimes accommodate buses but cautioned the county may not guarantee bay access at all times and that heavy-duty lifts and pit capacity must be confirmed. Dejarnette said training for the specific buses is available and that ALDOT funding could cover classes and much of the equipment expense.

Dejarnette also asked permission to hire a budgeted temporary part-time transit driver to cover out-of-town trips while the agency replaces a full-time driver. He reviewed proposed tag-office floor plans that would free up space for training and storage once departments move to the new courthouse.

The commission asked staff to refine cost estimates, confirm reimbursement rates with ALDOT, and coordinate with the road department on bay access and equipment before final approval.
