NCAA women’s final four legacy award funds Washington Activity Center restoration

Northwest Division Deputy Director Bob Adams briefed the Parks Board on the Washington Activity Center legacy restoration funded as part of the 2026 NCAA Women’s Final Four legacy program. The project included a full gym restoration (new floor surfacing, wall pads, bleachers and scoreboards), a converted classroom into a teen room, a new computer room, a literacy lounge, upgraded outdoor basketball surfacing and a new community mural created with neighborhood input.
Adams said the site was selected after tours and conversations with local youth and neighborhood leaders and noted the project aims to create welcoming spaces for sports, education and community connection. He described the mural as celebrating labor, endurance and service and noted collaboration with the Office of Arts and Culture and neighborhood stakeholders in selecting local artists.
The department said the legacy work delivered structural and programmatic upgrades intended to benefit more than 18,000 neighborhood residents who use the Washington Activity Center each year. A dedication ceremony was held April 1, attended by NCAA and sponsor representatives and local leaders; the city hosted a community mural unveiling and a ribbon cutting for the new gym.
Board members thanked staff for the project; no formal board action was required.
