Stanton County Trustees voted May 11 to approve the 2026 water-quality monitoring proposal, a program priced at $89,100 that continues routine testing and adds new elements including Vibrio monitoring and microbial-source tracking.
A trustee presenting the committee report summarized the proposal’s core elements: basic parameters such as temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen; bacterial monitoring (including fecal coliform/enterococci); spatial mapping cruises in Nappeague Harbor and Wayne Scott Pond; continuous monitoring in 3-Mile Harbor; and microbial-source-tracking sampling to distinguish human, bird and mammal fecal sources. "The total price tag is $89,100," the presenter said.
The monitoring plan proposes microbial-source-tracking at multiple sites with samples taken every two weeks during the monitoring season; the presenter said there are four sites in Akibonic Harbor and two in Nappeague Harbor for that work. Trustees discussed budget history and asked for comparison to prior years; the presenter said last several years’ budgets were broadly similar and that this year includes additional sampling in 3-Mile Harbor and a new Vibrio component.
A motion to approve the proposal was made and seconded; trustees responded "Aye," and the motion passed.
