Abington School District officials and project consultants presented schematic designs and a permitting-driven schedule Thursday evening for a proposed new Abington Middle School that would sit on the existing campus and serve roughly 2,200 students.
Superintendent Jeff Fetcher opened the community presentation and said the project evolved from a year of study, public input, a scientific community survey and feasibility work. Selby Nimawalu of Shrader Group Architecture outlined the site constraints — a township setback, riparian buffers and the requirement that the current middle school remain operational during construction — that determined the new building’s footprint. Nimawalu said the new building would occupy space now used for tennis courts, the cinder track and some athletic fields and would reorient the district’s athletic complex, including new baseball/softball fields, a synthetic‑turf core and a fieldhouse.
The architects described an academic design based on "team houses": 12 team units arranged across three stories for grades six through eight, with each team sized for about 150–180 students so the large school feels smaller day‑to‑day. Program elements include four cafeterias (one per team cluster), a 750‑seat auditorium, a lower‑level gym with three courts and 750 bleacher seats, arts and STEM hubs, and multiple elevators to improve accessibility.
Doug Taylor of ICS reviewed schedule milestones: schematic and design development work through design‑development and construction‑document phases into September 2026, a permitting and approval push aimed at January 2027, contractor bidding after approvals, and an anticipated construction start in January or February 2027. Taylor said the district expects building completion by June 2029, followed by phased demolition of the existing middle school (a roughly five‑ to six‑month process) and site work with temporary parking and final field restoration expected by summer/fall 2030.
On financing, Finance lead Miss Denola said the district will manage the project to remain within the $285 million referendum cap approved by voters. Tax impacts were estimated at about $16 per month for the 2026–27 tax year and an average impact of roughly $54 per month while the debt is outstanding; Denola said borrowing would be phased as debt is drawn. She added that contingency funds and value‑engineering options are being kept available should bidders come in over estimates, and the district will pursue external grants as opportunities arise.
During an extended public Q&A, officials addressed construction impacts and neighborhood concerns. The district said students will remain in the existing middle school during construction with phased fencing and maintained emergency access; temporary staging and contractor trailers will impact some fields during construction. Taylor said contractors must follow township noise ordinances, will use dust‑control measures such as water trucks, and the district will conduct neighbor outreach with a construction plan for timing and mitigation.
Design details noted sustainability considerations: a tight site makes geothermal unlikely, but the building will be "solar ready" (roof and electrical space sized to allow future solar panels), and daylight‑harvesting and life‑cycle cost analyses will guide choices about higher‑cost systems. Architects also described material choices (gypsum partition walls, acoustic fabrics, laminated glazing and masonry base) intended to improve acoustic and maintenance performance over the existing building.
Special‑education programming and accessibility were discussed: staff said the design includes multiple sensory rooms, some classrooms with functional bathrooms for life‑skills instruction, and placement of special‑education spaces within team zones to encourage inclusion. Multiple elevators and improved vertical circulation were highlighted as an accessibility improvement.
Officials emphasized continued public engagement: project materials and a FAQ are hosted at 1d1future.org, renderings will be shown at an upcoming board meeting in May, and the district invited further questions via QR codes and an email contact. Fetcher closed by reiterating the district’s commitment to student safety and continued education quality during construction.
The district did not present any formal board vote or binding approvals tonight; several permitting steps remain (planning commission, zoning hearing board, conservation district/NPDES) that the presenters said must be completed before bidding and mobilization.
