One commissioner asked staff to prepare a study comparing commissioner compensation across municipalities in Polk County. The request was framed as a data-gathering exercise rather than an immediate proposal to change pay.
City Attorney John Murphy and staff said the information is readily available and can include population and budget metrics; staff estimated they could produce the comparison within about 5 to 10 days without hiring a consultant. Murphy also referenced the city code (section 2-228) and charter section 16 as the legal authorities that govern commissioner compensation and timing of any changes.
Staff did not provide current monthly dollar amounts during the agenda-review session and said they would research codified and current figures and return with a formal report to inform any future deliberation. Commissioners discussed timing and the political sensitivity of pay changes and indicated any substantive change would likely be considered outside an election year.
