Palatka approves Booker Park playground replacement and related upgrades

The City of Palatka on April 23 approved a planned replacement of playground equipment and site improvements at Booker Park.
Public Works Director Joe Verio presented equipment plans that include a zip line, canopy-covered swings, new sidewalks, fencing and lighting upgrades to improve safety and reduce maintenance. Verio said the existing playground (installed roughly 2002–2005) is deteriorated and the city can save an estimated $30,000–$35,000 by using its crews for demolition and site prep before supplier installation.
Commissioners discussed surfacing options and chose the standard playground mulch used at other city parks rather than the rubberized surface used on the riverfront, citing past complaints about mulch displacement. Verio said the selected modular equipment will simplify future maintenance by allowing interchange of parts.
A motion to approve the purchase and proceed with the project passed by voice vote; staff said the work is already included in the current parks capital budget and said the timing should align with the splash-pad construction so the park work will complete as part of a broader park refresh.
