Board approves Adelphia Elementary planning year to pilot team-teaching and reduced screen time

The Santa Fe Public Schools board voted April 23 to allow Adelphia Elementary to enter a planning year for a Schools of Innovation proposal that will pilot team teaching and an intentional reduction in passive screen time.
Principal Cameron Sperry told trustees the plan responds to three needs she identified at Adelphia: fluctuating math and reading proficiency, teacher workload and burnout, and concerns from families about excessive screen use. The proposal would pair teams of teachers to co-plan and co-teach and intentionally limit passive computer time in favor of hands-on, inquiry-based learning. The school will partner with Arizona State University’s Next Education Workforce initiative for professional learning and implementation support.
Funding and measures: The Thornburg Foundation will fund most professional-learning costs and the district estimates a modest three-year investment of roughly $15,000 for stipends and flexible-classroom furniture. Success will be measured by NWEA benchmarking, attendance and discipline data, classroom walk-throughs and staff/family surveys.
Trustees welcomed the idea and encouraged clear communications to families during the planning year. The motion to allow Adelphia to begin its planning-year work passed by voice vote.
Next steps: Adelphia will use the planning year to develop the model and align measures; the district will monitor outcomes to determine whether the approach should be expanded to other schools.
