Resident urges Murrysville to ease beekeeping rules; planning commission considering zoning change

Resident David Bosetti told council he was cited last June under the borough code (chapter 220, article 6, section 2265) that currently treats beekeeping as agricultural/animal‑husbandry use requiring 10 acres. Bosetti said backyard beekeepers perform community and youth mentoring and urged the borough to allow smaller, non‑commercial beekeeping.
"I was cited from the municipality for keeping honey bees...I need 10 acres or more to house bees," Bosetti said, adding that he relocated his hives to Indiana County but would like to resume mentoring in Murrysville.
Chief administrator Michael responded that planning commission is reviewing a draft zoning ordinance that would remove animal husbandry from R2 and R3 districts and eliminate the conditional‑use hearing requirement for beekeeping; after planning commission review the draft would come to council for its consideration.
No ordinance was adopted at the meeting; the planning commission’s recommendations will precede further council action.
