Mars Area SD board approves two administrative hires and highlights mascot vote

The Mars Area School District board voted to approve two administrative hires and carried several routine agenda items during its meeting.
The board approved the hiring of Colton Stewart as a full-time payroll and benefits administrator effective on or about July 1 at an Act 93 annual salary of $83,000 (pro rated). The hire follows the resignation of Tracy Fox and was approved by roll call after a motion and second; eight members voted yes and one member, Mr. De Predis, was absent.
The board also moved, contingent on clearances and necessary paperwork, to hire Zachary Haines as the full-time director of human resources effective on or about May 11 at an Act 93 annual salary of $90,000 (pro rated) following the resignation of Kimberly Holman. That motion likewise passed on roll call with eight yes votes and one absence.
Administration thanked the board for participating in a special hiring meeting and praised the quality of candidates. “Many, many excellent candidates that we interviewed last week,” said Dr. Ziers, representing administration, and thanked staff involved in the selection process.
During board comments, members encouraged community participation in the district’s high-school mascot contest, noting the district website posts a voting pop-up and that community members had generated an unusually high turnout. Board members cited a reported final vote total of about 48,000 and said the district outpaced a rival entry.
Mrs. Branstetter, among other members who spoke about personnel, said the choices were difficult because of the strong applicant pool and expressed optimism about the new hires: “We had some very qualified candidates … excited about Colton and Zach and what we can do as we move forward.”
Board members also recognized volunteer efforts at the elementary school; one member thanked Mrs. McClellan and her husband for painting games on the blacktop and called the work “above and beyond.”
The board approved additional routine finance, buildings and grounds, and miscellaneous agenda items by voice vote and then adjourned.
