Commission approves hiring, accepts SRF funds and signs trail-riders lease; receives frost and weed-control updates

Williams County commissioners on April 21 approved several routine administrative items and heard operations updates from staff.
Personnel and leases: The commission approved filling a vacant corrections officer position after staff presented the position report. Commissioners also approved and authorized the chairman and auditor to accept construction maintenance funds from a special road fund (an 80/20 split) for the Eping Springbrook campground road project; the motion authorized electronic signatures for the auditor and the chairman. The board approved the Trail Riders lease for a small fairgrounds building and authorized the chairman to sign; staff noted an outstanding Saddle Club lease would be finalized separately.
Operational updates: Tanner reported frost laws are scheduled to lift Wednesday at noon for areas south of Highway 2 and said crews will contract out repairs for frost boils timed with upcoming paving work. Tom Leo, the county weed control director, told commissioners the department is shifting from broad-coverage spraying to targeted hand‑spraying to reduce drift and chemical use and to better measure infestation levels. He reported the county has the highest population of herbicide‑resistant kochia in the state and described potential fall pre‑emergent strategies for industrial bare-ground sites; he also said the county is coordinating with Development Services and the North Dakota Weed Control Association on statewide guidance.
The motions to hire, accept funds and sign the lease all passed on unanimous roll call votes.
