The Hampton County School District Board recognized elementary art teacher Mr. Welch on April 21 as a 2026 recipient of the South Carolina Governor's Awards for the Arts. Dr. Sheffield introduced and praised Mr. Welch for his work as an award-winning printmaker and mentor to students.
Mr. Welch thanked the district and said the arts provide a place for students who may otherwise struggle to belong. "The arts gives them a chance to express themselves and share with other people their feelings," he said, and urged the board to prioritize recruiting and retaining more arts and related-arts teachers as some faculty approach retirement. Board members applauded and thanked him for his work.
The recognition was accompanied by applause and brief remarks from colleagues who highlighted recent school performances and student productions.
