Collector reports limited in-person signups and commissioners discuss automatic renewals for senior tax freeze
Summary
Cole Countys collector reported 21 in-person senior tax-freeze applications over two days and commissioners debated eliminating the paper renewal card in favor of administrative checks (using death records and property transfers) while cautioning about accuracy and the need for a positive statement from applicants.

The county collector updated the Cole County Commission on senior tax-freeze applications and possible changes to the renewal process, saying in-person application sessions produced 21 submissions in two days and that staff are offering weekly in-person sessions through June 30.
"We started in-person applications last Wednesday and Thursdayand we took in 21 applications in two days," the county collector said, describing outreach and online application availability for new and renewal applicants.
Commissioners discussed whether to eliminate the one-page renewal application and rely instead on administrative verification of eligibility (for example, checks for property transfers or deaths). Some commissioners favored automatic renewal when county records show no ownership change or death, while others urged requiring a positive declaration from the homeowner to reduce the risk of incorrectly granting benefits.
One commissioner noted other Missouri counties (Boone, Greene) have ended the renewal application and instituted verification processes; staff said those counties set up data checks to catch property transfers and death notices before automatically renewing eligibility.
A commissioner highlighted that newspaper reporting of roughly 5,000 prior-year applications had understated broader household impact, because each application may represent multiple household members. Commissioners instructed staff to continue developing options and to present recommendations for renewal handling and outreach.
