District leaders presented a broad update on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programming that trustees said is expanding rapidly across San Bernardino City Unified.
Dr. Clay, who leads the district's STEAM work, said the department now supports dozens of school labs, professional development for teachers and a slate of student opportunities including robotics competitions, 3D design, and summer programs tied to Cal State San Bernardino. "Bite is always exploring the world around him, looking for patterns, asking questions about how and why things work," Dr. Clay said, describing the district's STEAM mascot and curriculum approach.
Key progress reported: 24 schools implementing CEM-linked math and computer‑science lessons, 33 schools operating STEAM labs, 26 STEAM competitions this academic year, and partnerships for extended learning and field trips. The district said it intends to expand STEAM lab access to 47 schools next year with a goal of districtwide coverage by 2030.
Trustees asked about designations for schools (level 1 explorer through level 3 innovator), communications and how to scale certification pathways such as drone and aviation certifications. Dr. Clay said the district will pilot new Lego education computer-science and AI curriculum and expand opportunities for industry-recognized certifications where appropriate.
Board members urged more public communications about the work and asked staff to coordinate site visits and to consider showcasing top student teams at board meetings or public events.
Dr. Clay and the EXL department will follow up with more details about competition schedules, certification offerings and a plan for communicating STEAM milestones to families and partners.
