The Muscatine City Council held the second reading of an ordinance on April 21 that would establish regulations for the use of electric bikes and other electric mobility devices on city property and trails.
Council Member Gordon said he has received several phone calls in support of the ordinance and welcomed clear parameters about where e-bikes may be ridden. Council Member Gindrich asked whether signs would be needed on trails to clarify permitted uses and whether the expense was necessary; a staff member identified as Andrew said he is working on a sign design and will include sign options and estimated costs for the third reading (staff said prototype signs cost roughly $70–$80 each).
Council members expressed support for moving the ordinance forward; the second reading passed with unanimous votes and staff will return with design examples for the final vote.
Council Member Gordon: “I just think this is great. I’ve gotten several phone calls regarding it and it’s nice to have an ordinance now so they can ride their electric bikes and where the parameters are and keeping everybody safe.”
