Northville board honors student-athletes after record seasons

The Northville Public Schools Board of Education on April 20 set aside a portion of its regular meeting to recognize student‑athletes and coaches from multiple programs after a season of state‑level achievements.
Superintendent Dr. Weber introduced teams and invited players and coaches to the front of the room for photos and brief remarks. “This is a really a wonderful moment for so many reasons,” Dr. Weber said as he welcomed participants and described the district’s plan to take photos of teams with the board.
Coaches and player leaders described the season highlights. Ski head coach Kyle Moyer credited team cohesion for the program’s success and introduced Sarah Devia, who said, “This is our first year qualifying for states as a girls team,” an achievement met with applause. Captain Luca Viola added that strong cross‑training and parental support helped the boys earn a third consecutive top‑10 state finish.
Gymnastics captains Andrea and Kendall Herren recounted a second straight regional championship and an eighth‑place team finish at states, with multiple gymnasts qualifying individually. Wrestling coach Derek Gala described a 27–11 dual team record, a third straight district title and the launch of the district’s first middle‑school wrestling program, welcoming 25 middle‑school athletes into the pipeline.
Assistant swim coach Ashley Garinger highlighted an eighth consecutive conference championship and a state runner‑up team finish, naming several individual all‑state placings and noting that the 200 medley relay earned an automatic All‑American time. Boys hockey coach Ryan Osmacher said his team notched the most wins in program history and was the first Northville public high‑school team in 20 years to reach the Division I state finals.
Girls hockey coaches Jay Lee and Paul Candela told the board the girls captured their first state championship in program history and noted the team’s strong academic profile. Board members and administrators emphasized the value of extracurricular programs for student development and the importance of growing the youth pipeline into middle‑school programs.
The recognition concluded with a photo opportunity and brief board comments praising coaches, volunteers and families. The district encouraged community attendance at upcoming performances and events, including the high school musical and the NEF STEAM fair.
