Comal ISD approves new K–5 ELA and high school math materials, ratifies TEA certification

Comal ISD trustees on April 23 approved the selection and purchase of high-quality instructional materials for K–5 English language arts (HMH Into Reading Texas) and high-school geometry and Algebra II, and ratified the district’s Certification of Provision of Instructional Materials survey required by TEA.
Presenter Miss Keller said the materials were selected after teacher review and voting following the state’s revised IMRA approval list (House Bill 1605). Staff explained the district will use its $40-per-student IMRA entitlement (which carries over when not used) to purchase approved materials and that teacher feedback drove the recommendation. Keller said teachers favored HMH’s structured daily literacy slides and updated supports for writing instruction.
Board members asked clarifying questions about contract scope, digital licenses and the need for some printed materials not covered by earlier proclamation-era purchases. David Krinski pressed staff on cost and licensing differences between version one and version two; staff explained the district had previously purchased a digital license for the earlier version and is seeking printed components and updated digital materials now. The board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation; the motion carried 4–0.
The ratification allows district staff to submit the certification survey to TEA by the May 1 deadline and to proceed with teacher training and implementation activities over the summer of 2026 ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
