Humboldt supervisors continue Q-zone Redway item amid public calls to strengthen protections

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors announced at the start of the April 21 meeting that Item I1, concerning Q-zone protections for the Redway/Redwood Grove area, had been pulled from today's calendar and will return at a later, near-future date. County staff and members of the public urged the board to use the delay to clarify enforcement and to secure interagency commitments.
"Item I1 regarding the Q zone is going to be continued to a date uncertain but in the near future," the CAO told the meeting at the opening recess, and later repeated that staff would return with a complete approach for board consideration.
Multiple members of the public who later spoke during the non-agenda public-comment period pressed the board for stronger protections. Redway residents and members of the Old Growth Neighborhood Association described lower Redway as a residential area with small parcels that are not well-served by timber-harvest rules and urged a memorandum of understanding with Cal Fire so the county and state agencies are aligned on enforcement.
"Lower Redway is not timberland; these are small residential parcels and they can only be protected by clarifying and strengthening the Q zone," one resident told the board. Commenters asked the board to resist any "watering down" of the Q-zone protections during revisions and to pursue an MOU with Cal Fire and other agencies to ensure durable protections.
The board did not take action on the item today; staff and the CAO told residents the item will return with more complete materials and interagency coordination.
