Rutherford County board approves Rutherford Prep charter application on first reading after lengthy finance debate

The Rutherford County School System board voted 7–1 on April 23 to approve the Rutherford Prep charter application on first reading following an hours-long discussion over finances and oversight.

Director of Schools Dr. Sullivan recommended approval on first read to avoid delaying the school’s planned 2027 opening. Board members split over whether to deny and require fixes — which would trigger a 30-day resubmission period and an estimated 90-day delay — or to approve now and continue oversight as the applicant provides additional materials.
