Commissioner Nickel proposed a temporary moratorium on development approvals for data centers, data processing facilities and cryptocurrency mining operations in Harnett County and asked county staff to gather information for the board ahead of a public hearing scheduled for May 4, 2026.
The proposal was introduced as part of new business at the April 20, 2026 meeting. Commissioner Nickel also raised a separate possible initiative to consider a growth cost transparency index tool in the future; the recap does not record additional detail on that proposal.
The board did not take final action on the moratorium at the April 20 meeting; instead commissioners set a public hearing so members of the public and staff can provide information and comment before any ordinance is drafted, amended or voted on. The next board meeting and public hearing are scheduled for Monday, May 4 at 9:00 a.m., and the county published the full meeting video and agenda materials on www.harnett.org/boc.
No public comments or staff reports specific to the moratorium are recorded in the meeting recap; the record states only that Commissioner Nickel asked staff to gather information and that a public hearing will occur.
