Committee approves $4,500 grant for local shooting sports program, discusses reallocating other community funds

The Houston County Budget Committee approved a $4,500 funding request from the Houston County Shooting Sports Association to purchase two skeet machines and controllers, using available funds in the youth sports line in this year’s budget.
Committee members reviewed the association’s request and acknowledged the organization’s prior activities, including participants traveling for competition. The motion to approve the $4,500 request was moved and seconded; members voted by voice in favor and asked staff to route the award through the appropriate processing channels.
Separately, members discussed a $15,000 contribution listed for Highland Rim and whether some or all of that allocation should be redirected to Meals on Wheels to better support senior nutrition and outreach. Committee members noted additional one-time donations from Kinder Morgan had supplemented county allocations to Bethesda and other local organizations. The committee deferred final decisions on reallocation and asked staff to follow up at the next budget meeting.
