Cliffside Park board honors kindergarten teacher Mrs. Fontan and student Amber Vargas

The Cliffside Park Board of Education used part of its meeting to recognize two members of its school community: a retiring kindergarten teacher and a student honored at the county level.

Board members and administrators paid tribute to Mrs. Fontan, identified in the meeting as a longtime kindergarten teacher and the district's anti-bullying specialist. Speakers described her classroom traditions — annual Mother's Day projects and a gingerbread ornament activity — and thanked her for years of service to students and families.

The board also presented a resolution formally recognizing Amber Vargas for being named a 2026 Bergen County Unsung Hero. Ms. Prais, who nominated Vargas and attended the Bergen County ceremony, read the citation given at the event: “The Cliffside Park High School Unsung Hero Award is proudly presented to Amber Vargas, a student whose impact is not through loud recognition but through quiet dedication and compassion.” Prais noted Vargas' volunteer work, leadership as founder and president of an animal advocacy club, participation in the Wonder Girls program, and that she is a first-generation college student.

Board members and attendees applauded after the presentation. The resolution text included the board's congratulations and best wishes for Vargas' continued success.
