Centerville’s City Council on April 21 adopted the 2024 edition of the International Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Code, complying with recent state legislation that requires municipalities to adopt the updated standard.
City attorney planning staff explained that the Legislature adopted the 2024 WUI code during the last session and that municipalities must match the statewide code. The council scheduled the local ordinance to take effect Jan. 1, 2027, matching the state’s implementation timetable.
The adoption is largely administrative: it brings local building and land-use rules into alignment with statewide fire-safety updates intended to address construction and defensible-space requirements where developed areas meet wildland fuels. Staff indicated the city is finished with this required legislative update for the year.
The council took public comment; none spoke in opposition during the hearing. The motion to adopt the code passed unanimously.
