The Davenport City Council recognized off-duty first responders April 22 for their roles in recent life-saving incidents, praising quick bystander CPR and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
Council recounted an incident on Feb. 22 in which Lieutenant Michael Putnam and bystanders at the Bittner YMCA performed CPR and used an AED after a sudden cardiac arrest; emergency medical services arrived and the patient later regained a pulse before transport. The council also cited an incident on March 17 when firefighter Kyle Nichols and his brother, Dustin Nichols, responded to an unresponsive 12-year-old at the bottom of a pool; quick action and CPR preceded the child's recovery and release from care a few days later.
Chief Vandewear, speaking at the meeting, said, "I don't want to talk too much because it's about them, but I also want to point out the fact that even though we're recognizing those two, this entire department does this on a daily basis for this community." He emphasized training and coordinated teamwork as reasons for the successful outcomes.
Mayor and council presented recognitions and invited the honored responders and their families to the podium for brief remarks and photographs. City leaders used the moment to underscore the importance of CPR training, AED availability in public spaces and collaboration among first responders and bystanders.
