The Davenport City Council voted unanimously April 22 to suspend its rules and approve a temporary street and lane closure for the Davenport Community School District MAC Conference Track Meet at Brady Street Stadium.
The resolution authorizes closure of East 36th Street from Brady Street to west of 705 East 36th Street on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., to support the event and improve safety for students being unloaded from buses. The council suspended the normal rules to consider the late-added item before voting 9–0 to adopt the resolution.
Alderman Jobgen, who spoke during council discussion, said the closure "is pretty pertinent for safety as kids are getting unloaded loaded from buses," arguing the short-notice request was necessary to protect attendees. No members of the public addressed the council on the item.
The council took the street-closure vote after approving its consent agenda and other routine business earlier in the meeting, including two reappointments to the Riverfront Improvement Commission and three proclamations. The resolution was introduced after the council voted to suspend its rules; the transcript does not record the names of the mover and seconder for the specific motion to adopt the resolution.
Vote at a glance: T. Dunn — Yes; Vasquez — Yes; Blunk — Yes; Arndt — Yes; Holloway — Yes; Burkholder — Yes; Jobgen — Yes; Newton — Yes; Leenan — Yes (9 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain). The resolution includes the listed date, times and the closure boundaries for Ward 7.
The council also noted that the River Street realignment public meeting was being postponed into May and that several aldermen announced upcoming ward meetings and community events.
The council adjourned following the vote.
