Polk County commissioners accepted two donations to support the courthouse dog program and proclaimed the 45th National Crime Victims Rights Week.
Dana introduced the courthouse dog Silas and explained the county secured two grants to help cover the dog's food and veterinary costs: a $250 donation from Red Lake County Cooperative Electric and a $1,500 grant from United Way of Crookston. The board voted to accept the funds by voice vote.
Staff described Silas's role in the victim services office: working in three trials, assisting victims in the office and supporting law enforcement crisis responses. "He has worked with victims in three different trials so far and several victims stopping in the office with assistance," staff said, highlighting the dog's ability to reduce anxiety and help victims participate in proceedings.
The board also moved and carried a proclamation recognizing National Crime Victims Rights Week and will participate in a short tree‑planting remembrance ceremony outside the Justice Center later in the week.
