The Somerville Design Review Board on April 23 denied the applicant’s preliminary submission for a proposed Seven Brew coffee shop at 1320 North Main Street, citing unresolved vehicle circulation and queuing risks.
Project director Mark Ber presented a redesigned building intended to fit Somerville’s vernacular — “we introduced the, uh, traditional gable roof” — and said the team replaced the corporate prototype’s blue palette with neutral grays, added brick column bases and proposed screened rooftop equipment. The applicant said staff would manage on‑site queueing and that employees would direct cars in peak times.
Board members repeatedly expressed concern that on‑site queue management had not been engineered. One member said, “I’m not comfortable approving the site plan until engineering really looks at it hard,” noting the potential for vehicles to double‑stack, for queues to impede circulation, and for cars to back onto Main Street or Holiday Drive. Members questioned the large number of parking spaces, the safety of pedestrian access from rear parking, and whether shared parking agreements with nearby properties might be feasible.
After discussion a board member moved to deny the current set of plans on the basis of site planning and circulation, asking staff to engage engineering for the applicant to address traffic and queuing issues. The motion passed on a voice vote; the board recommended the applicant return with engineered circulation plans, revised parking, clearer pedestrian connections and any shared‑parking agreements before further review.
What’s next: the applicant was directed to coordinate with staff and engineering to resolve vehicle circulation and queue management, then resubmit for DRB consideration.
