The Coffey County Commission approved the Road and Bridge Department's 2026 construction project book and several personnel and procurement motions during the April 20 meeting.
Road Superintendent Ryan Durst summarized the work plan: roughly 27 miles of chip seal, 17 miles of hot‑mix asphalt overlay, an aggressive gravel‑replacement campaign (dozens of miles listed), targeted culvert and box‑culvert maintenance, bridge maintenance and two bridge replacement design projects to be completed by the end of the year. Durst said estimated overlay costs were roughly $3.2 million and that prices could shift with market conditions.
On personnel and classification items, the commission approved several CP2 payroll notices and promotions: a new heavy equipment operator hire (Clayton Bowman), a part‑time asphalt crew hire (Jason Bailey), and promotion of Dylan Wanzer to crew supervisor, along with a crew leader fill‑in promotion and the truck driver job description signoff.
Commissioners discussed bridge design proposals from multiple firms and initially considered spreading design work among firms. After discussion and a failed first motion, the commission approved BG Consultants for design engineering services for bridge replacement projects (motion recorded in the minutes). Commissioners also approved a seasonal mowing contract for a county parcel (Goodell Mowing at $250 per event) to be paid from the Community Improvement Reserve Fund.
The commission then approved the superintendent's request to adopt the 2026 construction project plan as its working schedule for the year and instructed staff to proceed with bids and contract administration consistent with that plan.
