City parks manager outlines maintenance schedule, mulch removal at dog park and a plan to publish ClickFix updates

The city’s operations manager told the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee on April 21 that crews have completed irrigation work and sod restoration at Egan Park, removed invasive landscaping and dead trees at McKenna and Lazarillo parks, and are pursuing alternatives after resident complaints about mulch installed at the Vinadel dog park.

"The Egan park completion of the installation of the new irrigation systems and the associated sod restoration has been completed," Mike Weaver said during his parks update, and he confirmed crews are taking out the organic mulch at Vinadel Park after numerous complaints and will look for a suitable replacement.

Weaver reviewed a seasonal maintenance schedule that includes citywide fertilization and stump grinding this spring, weed control through the early summer and a pause on large projects in July and August because of peak tourism. He also described a more proactive ClickFix workflow in which crews resolve issues before they escalate into formal work orders and attach before‑and‑after photos to improve accountability.

Committee members pressed staff for clearer public updates about parks that have been in disrepair—particularly three small parks on Blind Pass where sidewalks and a fishing pier were reported damaged and marked with 'no trespassing' signs. Members requested on‑site status signs and a public tracking grid sorted by district so neighbors can see prioritization and funding status.

Staff said a contractor will be on site to remove and replace a damaged sidewalk at Sunset Park this week and that public services will explore a citizen‑facing update mechanism and weekly reports to the commission with tracking information.

The advisory committee recorded the need for more transparent prioritization and for staff to return with a proposed public‑facing tracking system; no funding approvals were made.
