Human Relations Commission refines brochure, plans diversity table and flags project for council review

The Franklin Township Human Relations Commission spent its meeting finalizing outreach materials and planning near-term events and a hometown banners project that it will bring to the township council.

Edna Arguo Hitchner and Pete Clark described a year-long revision of the commission’s outreach brochure and proposed producing a postcard-style piece to distribute at the municipal building, library, the senior center and at community events. The commission discussed printing options — including using a high-school print shop or a local commercial printer — and agreed to estimate costs before a run; an initial target of 200 postcards was proposed for upcoming events.

Samina, identified by the group as a co-chair of the commission, said the group had consulted indigenous partners (named as Leah, Tai and Theresa) about an indigenous appreciation proposal the commission approved at a previous meeting. Partners advised selecting either May or September for an event because summer months are busy with pow-wows; commissioners said September may be preferable. They also raised the question whether the commission should take the event directly to the council or proceed with partner-organized activities; members agreed council review is needed for formal approval.

Commissioners also described a hometown banners (flag) project to honor living or deceased residents with military connections. Pete Clark said the commission had drafted a PowerPoint and a three-paragraph description and that the commission “passed the motion” to take the proposal to the township council for review and blessing; the township will be the official sponsor if the council approves. The commission discussed coordinating with Safy Kalen, the township project manager, and with secretary Anmar on next steps.

The commission reviewed a district World Day of Cultural Diversity event scheduled for May 1 at Samson G. Middle School from 6 to 8 p.m. Members agreed to staff a table and distribute materials and requested volunteers. The commission also proposed offering certificates or thank-you cards and using a library display case to highlight HRC guests and activities.

Commissioners noted the township budget has not yet been adopted and said timing for council consideration of proposals may depend on council schedules and the budget process. The group confirmed there will be no HRC meeting in May and adjourned.
