A resident who identified himself as Frank of South Washington urged the Downtown Development Authority to prioritize paving a nearby alley and address pedestrian safety along Fifth Street.
Frank told the board the alley is “a nightmare” and said the city risks running out of time to complete work this year. He also said streetlights on Fifth Street were not working and pedestrians were crossing into traffic at night. “I am so disappointed that the idiots that are driving through downtown Royal Oak at 30, 40 miles an hour,” he said, adding that the board needed to act before someone is hurt.
The comment came during a meeting the chair opened despite a lack of quorum; the chair said the board could not take formal action or reschedule the meeting without a vote. Because the meeting was unofficial, no motion or staff directive was taken in response to the resident’s request.
Board members present later asked staff to review lighting at a nearby corner and to coordinate with contractors to assess whether additional lighting or signage is needed to improve pedestrian safety. The DDA chair said staff would work on rescheduling the meeting so formal action could be considered at a later date.
