Council approves $33,000 artificial turf replacement for Main Street Park playground

Parks staff presented a plan to replace the natural turf within the fenced playground area at Main Street Park with artificial turf because heavy use has worn the grass and created muddy conditions when it rains. City Manager Jacob Evans described the $33,000 quote and said the project would be paid from impact fees.
"This is to provide turf to the entire Main Street Park playground ... The quote is before you for $33,000 and some change and it will come from impact fees," Evans said. Council asked about closure and staging; operations staff (Trampus Hanzer) said they plan to install the turf in sections and keep parts of the playground open where possible, using pavilion gates to maintain access while work proceeds.
Council Member Sandy Sawyer moved to approve the project as presented; another council member seconded and the council approved the expenditure. Staff said they will first attempt to salvage and tighten the existing turf where feasible and will proceed with replacement if the current material cannot be brought back to serviceable condition.
The project was approved using impact-fee funds and is intended to reduce maintenance issues and improve playground usability during wet weather.
