Zoning board grants sign variances for Supreme Fuel’s Telegraph Road station

The Southfield Zoning Board of Appeals on April 21 approved sign variances for a gas station at 25011 Telegraph Road (corner of Telegraph and 10 Mile) owned by Mohammed Sebol and represented at the hearing by Chris Carati of Aversign Company.
City staff recommended approval of two variances: a product price sign area of 28.72 square feet proposed versus 20 square feet permitted (variance 8.72 sq ft), and an under-clearance height of 4.5 feet proposed versus 8 feet permitted (variance 3.5 ft). Staff conditioned favorable consideration on the appellant securing all required permits from the Southfield Building Department and receiving final inspection approval.
Chris Carati told the board the updated sign would remove two panels and consolidate information so the display is smaller and more current, and said the BP logo on the sign would be slightly reduced. "We're removing one of the panels and then changing it out basically for ... another pricer section. I believe that the BP logo will be slightly smaller as well so that we can maintain the under clearance at I think 5 feet," Carati said.
No members of the public spoke. Mr. Jenkins asked whether other site signs were being changed; Carati replied that this is the single sign being altered and any other replacements would be like-for-like. Mr. Rogers moved to approve the variances based on the city staff recommendation; the motion was seconded and the board approved the request. The board reiterated that installation must await issuance of the appropriate permits and final sign-off by the building department.
The approved variances permit the larger price-panel area and reduced under-clearance described; compliance with Southfield permitting and inspection requirements remains a condition of the approval.
