Architect outlines Sportsplex turf and structure upgrades; bidding to start next week

Council heard that the school system contributed $675,000 for a jumbotron already installed at the complex, and that the school separately funded speaker upgrades. Bidders: Zats said eight contractors were on the bidders’ list as of the prior Friday and the city expects local contractors to participate when bidding opens next Tuesday.
Scope and alternatives: the base bid would turf infields and down the foul lines, add fencing and correct drainage in left field; alternates include full outfield turf, concrete work behind backstops to solve flooding, and other add-ons. The baseball scope also includes a new fence and a drainage fix in the outfield; softball scope is a complete turf field with new bullpens and foul poles.
Maintenance and ownership: presenters said the city will remain responsible for field maintenance; turf upkeep equipment will be provided with the project and turned over to city staff, and the athletic fields will remain available for youth leagues and championship events.
What’s next: bidders were expected to submit proposals next week; council members requested local-bidder participation where possible. No vote was taken on the capital work during the meeting.
