Alexander City Council approves rezones, pole and streetlight agreements, and updates solid-waste fees

Alexander City Council on March 23 approved several routine but consequential measures, including two rezoning ordinances, a pole-lease resolution with Charter Communications, an agreement with Alabama Power to add street lights in a new subdivision and an amendment to the city’s solid-waste fee ordinance.
The council voted 6-0 to adopt an ordinance rezoning property at 2431 Day Road from I-1 (light industrial) to B-2 (general business) and, separately, to rezone a Lakeview Circle parcel from RR (residential) to SD-1 (lakefront/resort special district). Mayor presided over both votes after motions and seconds from council members; each passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: the rezones clear the way for business and development activity on those lots while the city continues to manage land use along key corridors.
In infrastructure votes, council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to enter a lease agreement with Charter Communications for use of city utility poles and separately authorized an agreement with Alabama Power to install street lights in Phase Four of the Miners Cove subdivision. Under the Miners Cove deal the developer pays for poles and installation; the city will assume responsibility for the electrical bill.
A separate ordinance brought from the floor amended Chapter 90 (solid waste services) to allow the city to pass contractor collection costs through to residents and to add a $1 administrative fee for commercial pickups; that amendment passed on immediate consideration by a 6-0 vote.
Licenses: the council approved a transfer of a tobacco/other-nicotine-products license for the Rabbit Hole convenience store at 2574 Highway 280 Unit A; the transfer passed 5-0 with Councilman Lucas recorded as abstaining. A related request to add a package-store liquor license and a specialty retail consumable-hemp endorsement for the same business was discussed at length and tabled to the April 6 meeting for further review.
What’s next: several items — including the package-store/liquor/hemp application and pending ordinances that failed immediate consideration — will return to the council agenda at the next meeting.
