Mayor reports nearly $9 million state contribution for Expo Center, plans for school bus garage and construction manager

Mayor Randy Porter updated commissioners on multiple county construction projects: renovations at the transfer station, steel erection for barns at the new fairgrounds, work on grandstands and the food vendor area, and completed site work for a school bus garage, road department and maintenance facility on Tennessee Avenue (completed by Rogers Group).
Porter said the county received a state contract that will cover "almost $9 million" toward the Expo Center project and that he has signed and returned the contract. He said the county will bid the project and plans to include the school bus garage and other buildings in the coming capital projects budget, and recommended using a construction manager (a procurement approach the county has used on prior projects, which he said saved money on the jail addition and emergency services buildings).
Commissioners did not object to the mayor's plan to solicit and award a construction manager, and the mayor said he would proceed to put the construction manager role out to bid so work can begin once budget approval and value‑engineering are completed.
