Tavares library reports increased use; council awards $2,500 mayor's youth scholarship

Library staff presented National Library Week highlights and usage statistics and praised staff and volunteers. The library reported 293 programs and 5,538 attendees so far this fiscal year and said physical visits have increased by 8 percent compared with the prior year. Staff also reported a record-breaking AARP tax-assistance season and said they are considering expanding tax help from two to three days next year.
"This year's National Library Week theme is Find Your Joy," a library presenter said, and the staff distributed a small commemorative book to the council to mark the occasion. The library introduced members of its team and noted the library functions as a community hub offering story time, study rooms and education services.
Separately, the council recognized Mary Louise Gabrielle Sarno as a graduate of the mayor's youth council program. Staff described the program requirements and praised Sarno's handwritten report and department shadowing. Council discussed increasing the scholarship from the program's standard $1,000; after a motion and second, council voted 4-0 to increase the award to $2,500.
Council and staff congratulated Sarno and encouraged her to return to municipal service.
