Tavares council adopts FY2027 budget calendar; city recognized with GFOA budget award

The Tavares City Council unanimously approved the proposed FY2027 budget calendar and acknowledged a Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) distinguished budget award for the city's FY2026 adopted budget.
Finance staff told the council the general fund budget and tentative millage will be presented on July 15, enterprise and special revenue funds will be discussed in an Aug. 5 workshop, and the capital improvement plan is scheduled for Aug. 19. The first public hearing on the millage and proposed budget is set for Sept. 2, with the final public hearing scheduled for Sept. 16.
"The general fund budget is scheduled to be presented to the city council on 07/15/2026, and council will also set the tentative millage on that same date," a finance presenter said. Staff noted the calendar meets TRIM requirements and agreed to provide council members with budget materials a few days earlier so members can review them before individual meetings.
Separately, staff accepted the GFOA distinguished budget award for the FY2026 adopted budget. City officials praised the finance team's work and noted the award reflects adherence to best practices in budget presentation.
Council voted to approve the budget calendar 4-0. Next steps: staff will finalize the calendar, schedule the workshops and public hearings, and distribute the electronic budget documents to council members in advance of the July presentation.
