Commissioner Show delivered an extended statement reviewing five‑year expenditure increases in the general fund and rising personnel costs. He said the county’s revaluation increased revenue available from previously approved bond allocations and argued for returning a portion of that capacity to taxpayers. "I'm requesting that the tax rate be lowered approximately another 4 cents," he said, citing projected bond debt service and an estimated value for a penny of tax revenue.
Other commissioners asked clarifying questions about timing and whether adding an EMS administrative assistant now should wait until the budget cycle. County Manager Barnett said the amendment would place the position in the current year’s budget (covering a quarter of the position this fiscal year) and that the county had staff and position descriptions ready to advertise once the board approved the amendment.
The consent agenda passed unanimously. Items included proclamations (Autism Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month, National Library Week, National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week), multiple budget amendments, allocation of funds for Senior Services meals and the Koulam Center project, and the award of the Deadmond Road pump‑station contract (staff identified J.R. Lynch as the low bidder). The board also created an EMS administrative assistant position to handle administrative duties following retirements, with the county manager describing the hire as intended to support crews and other departments.
After the vote commissioners reminded staff they expect careful monitoring of new positions and budget lines as the fiscal process continues this spring.
