The Chesterfield County Public Schools board spent a large portion of the March 11 work session completing a self-reflection and governance-handbook review, with members rating items from vision and values to communication and accountability.
Board members praised shared commitments to high expectations and data-driven decisions while identifying areas for improvement such as more deliberate team development, clearer vice-chair responsibilities, consistent internal communication and additional cultural-competency training for board members. Several members said the board sometimes strays into operational matters and suggested stronger role clarity to maintain focus on policy.
Members discussed adding language to the governance handbook to formalize board training and a joint annual retreat with the superintendent, and suggested including expectations for timely responses to constituent communications. One member emphasized that mentor and stipend approaches are contingent on state grant awards and should be documented clearly.
At the end of the public session, Chair Coker said the board would enter closed session. The board moved and seconded to go into closed session under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act authority cited in the meeting: Va. Code §2.2-3711(A)(1), describing the topic as "personnel disciplinary matters." The clerk called the roll and recorded votes from the five board members present (D. Hefron, Dominique Chatters, Steven Pron, Lisa Hudgin and Chair Coker), each answering in the affirmative; the board then entered closed session.
The meeting materials and the discussion emphasized governance refinements rather than new policy adoptions; no formal policy changes were approved in open session.
