Fire chief reports 43 calls in March, two fires and one firefighter resignation

Fire Chief John reported to the Monticello City Council on April 13 that the department ran 43 calls in March, held training exercises and experienced two small residential fires during the month.
"We ran 43 calls last month," John said, summarizing department activity. He described annual mask-fit testing to ensure interior firefighters have properly fitted respirators and a multi-week training sequence that included search-and-rescue exercises at a vacant two-story training house and routine truck and equipment maintenance.
John described two March fires: a basement fire on Orchard Lane that the department believes began when lightning struck an external antenna and ignited materials in a basement room, and a stove-related apartment fire on Siri Court where occupants were able to reoccupy the unit within about two hours. He praised mutual-aid partners and department crews for limiting damage and keeping operations contained to individual units.
The fire chief also reported one staffing change: firefighter Caleb Skinner resigned after receiving a promotion that limits his availability for department training and duties. The chief thanked Skinner for his service and noted the department will continue recruitment and training activities.
The council did not take action on these items; the reports were informational.
